SUMMARY:Isle of Arran Songwriting Workshop
LOCATION:The Ormidale Hotel
DESCRIPTION:Come to the beautiful Isle of Arran for a two day songwriting
workshop with singer songwriter Findlay Napier. The workshop will be held
in the Ormidale Hotel\, Brodick which is a short walk from Brodick ferry t
erminal. Places are limited to 12 Participants will begin with a blank pag
e and by the end of the weekend will have finished at least one song. Each
part of the songwriting precess will be broken into easily achievable tas
ks. Findlay will be on hand to offer assistance. Along the way we'll look
at generating ideas\, creating lyrics\, song form\, chord choice\, melody
and editing. This workshop is especially useful for writers who have troub
le finishing songs or struggle with writers block. We will be working on c
reating new songs but the processes we'll use can be applied to your older
material in your own time. Some songwriting workshops ask participants to
give a share of their PRS to the course leader. That will NOT be happenin
g on this course. Whatever you write on this course is your own. FORMAT: F
riday- I recommend arriving on the island Friday night. Evening meet and g
reet with sing-around TBC. Saturday- Workshops from 10am-5pm with breaks f
or coffee and lunch Sunday- Workshops from 10am- 5pm(ish) with breaks incl
uding a low key afternoon sharing concert. (Timings for Sunday will be arr
anged to finish so that "overseas visitors" can get last ferry back to the
mainland). This workshop would suit songwriters of any level. It helps if
you can play an accompanying musical instrument but that is not essential
. Get in touch with Findlay if you have any queries. Findlay Napier is a v
ery experienced songwriting tutor he has taught many courses at Scotland's
Creative Writing Centre Moniack Mhor and at for the Arvon Foundation at T
he Hurst in Shropshire. He has worked in prisons\, high schools\, youth gr
oups and primary schools across the UK. He was the songwriting tutor at Th
e Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2014 he was commissioned to write a
song for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games "Here's Tae All Out Common Wealth"
. More recently he was commissioned to write a song for the 125th Annivers
ary of the STUC and in 2025 he was commissioned by the BBC Radio 2 to writ
e a song for their 21st Century Folk program. In 2025 he won the MG Alba S
