 on working for media outlets while also developing independent projects fo
 cused on the social and physical transformations of urban centres\, especi
 ally in Asia. Travelling extensively\, he spent considerable time in Hong 
 Kong from 1982 through 1998\, where he photographed the Kowloon Walled Cit
 y for what became the influential publication City of Darkness: Life in Ko
 wloon Walled City (1993)\, later reissued as City of Darkness Revisited (2
 014). Girard was based in Shanghai between 1998 and 2011\, and is renowne
 d for his images of that city’s rapid\, and at times violent\, metamorph
 osis through the beginning of the 21st century. Girard has also produced a
  number of photobooks\, including Phantom Shanghai (2007)\, which The Inde
 pendent newspaper cited as one the top 10 photographic books ever produced
 \, as well as Under Vancouver\, 1972 - 1982 (2017)\, which is now in its f
 ourth printing. His photographs have appeared in a wide range of internat
 ionally circulating publications\, such as National Geographic\, the New 
 York Times Magazine\, Time\, Fortune\, and the Sunday Times Magazine 
 (UK).\nAbout Silke Schmickl Silke Schmickl is the CHANEL Senior Curator
 \, Head of Moving Image at M+ in Hong Kong. She was previously curator at
  the National Gallery Singapore and the Institute of Contemporary Arts Si
 ngapore\, a researcher at the German Center for Art History in Paris\, and
  the co-founding director of Lowave\, a Paris-based curatorial platform a
 nd publishing house for moving image artists. She has initiated and direct
 ed numerous art and film projects focusing on emerging art scenes in the 
 Middle East\, Africa\, and Asia\, and has curated exhibitions in partnersh
 ip with museums and biennials around the world. In her contribution to t
 he major monograph Greg Girard: Photographs 1972 - 2026 (The Polygon Gal
 lery and Magenta Foundation\, 2026)\, she writes about her collaborations
  with Greg Girard for M+:  a monumental slide projection on the museum’
 s façade based on Girard’s photobook HK:PM\, and the live cinema work
 \, Hong Kong Made Me\, scored by the punk band Gong Gong Gong. \n\nBole
