\nWaste is more than what one throws away. It’s al so what one sees\, reads\, and debates.
\nWaste has become one of th e defining challenges of our time. Cities around the world grapple with ov erflowing landfills\, informal recycling economies\, and unequal access to waste disposal infrastructure. In Zurich\, as in many other cities\, circ ular economy programmes are reshaping urban waste management.
\nYet waste is never just a technical or environmental issue. It is also deeply social\, political\, and cultural. It raises questions about power\, acces s\, and inequality: Who decides what counts as waste? How do media narrati ves shape public perceptions and policy? And what can anthropological pers pectives reveal about the ways waste is produced\, managed\, and valued ac ross different contexts?
\nThis panel brings together perspectives f rom anthropology\, media studies\, and urban governance to explore how was te is represented\, negotiated\, and managed in contemporary cities. Exper ts as well as the audience will examine the stories one tells about waste and ask what they reveal about broader questions of value\, inequality\, s ustainability\, and urban life.
\nThe panel features language and co mmunication professor Crispin Thurlow (University of Bern)\, project man ager Tabea Kaldis (Circular Economy\, City of Zurich)\, and cultural anthr opologist Kathrin Eitel (University of Zurich). The discussion wi ll be moderated by filmmaker and social anthropologist Lynn Kohli. The eve nt is organised by Zethno\, an independent association dedicated to foster ing public engagement with anthropology.
