Die LP folgt auf mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte Akt ivität\, die die Band als eine der wichtigsten Kräfte im britischen Psyc hedelic Rock und Soul etabliert haben. Nach Howes Tod legten Cadogan und d er Gründungsbassist Lewis Wharton die Zukunft der Band auf Eis.\n\nNachde m erste Pläne\, das Musizieren wieder aufzunehmen\, durch die Covid-19-Pa ndemie durchkreuzt wurden\, begannen die beiden mit ihrem langjährigen Fr eund Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentrics) zusammenzuarbeiten. Aus dieser Part nerschaft gingen zwei Alben hervor: „Quatermass Seven“ (2020) und „E lectric War“\, das im April 2025 bei Easy Eye Sound erschien. Auf „Gra vity Freeze“ sind die Hooks prägnanter\, die Grooves tiefer und die Atm osphäre dichter\, womit das Album an die früheren\, hochgelobten Werke d er Band anknüpft.\n\n„Hattest du schon mal eine Schlaflähmung?“\, fr agt Cadogan\, als er über den Titeltrack des neuesten Werks des Trios spr icht. „Darum geht es in ‚Gravity Freeze‘. Es ist wie ein Spitzname\, den ich diesem Moment gegeben habe\, in dem man aufgewacht ist und noch i mmer träumt. Als mir das zum ersten Mal passierte\, bin ich ausgeflippt\, weil ich mich nicht bewegen konnte\, aber nicht wusste\, ob ich wach war oder nicht. Es ist ein sehr seltsames Gefühl\, und man macht komische Sac hen\, wie zum Beispiel zu versuchen\, durch Kleiderschränke zu laufen. Es gibt ein paar Elemente auf dem Album\, die widerspiegeln\, was wir in den letzten Jahren durchgemacht haben. Wir haben viel durchgemacht\, einiges davon verarbeiten wir immer noch.“\n\nDie Arbeit an der LP begann Ende 2 023. Das Album wurde in den Rat Salad Studios in Hornsey\, Nord- London\, aufgenommen\, wobei Rupert Lyddon als Toningenieur und Co-Produzent fungie rte. Coote stieß für d as Album zur Band und steuerte Performances bei\, die von klassischen Jazz -\, Soul- und Blues-Rhythmen geprägt waren. Die Aufnahmen fanden parallel zu Cadogans Verpflichtungen als Tour- und Session- Gitarrist statt\, daru nter Arbeiten mit Liam Gallagher und John Squire\, The Black Keys und THE THE sowie Sessions in den Easy Eye Sound Studios in Nashville.\n\n„Gravi ty Freeze“ wurde mit Blick auf die Vinyl-Veröffentlichung geschrieben u nd zusammengestellt und markiert den 25. Jahrestag seit Little Barries ers ten Singles auf Stark Reality. The LP follows more than two decades of activity that have established the band as a key force in UK psychedelic rock and soul. Following Howe’s passing\, Cadogan and founding bassist Lewis Whar ton placed the future of the band on hold. After initial plans to resume p laying were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic\, the pair began collaborat ing with long-time friend Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentrics). This partners hip resulted in two albums\, Quatermass Seven (2020) and Electric War\, re leased on Easy Eye Sound in April 2025. For Gravity Freeze\, the hooks are sharper\, the grooves are deeper\, and the atmospherics thicker\, buildin g on the band’s previous\, highly-acclaimed work.\n\n“Have you ever ha d sleep paralysis?” asks Cadogan\, discussing the title track of the tri o’s latest offering. “That’s what ‘Gravity Freeze’ is written ab out. It’s like a nickname I gave to that moment where you’ve woken up and you’re still dreaming. The first time that happened to me\, I freake d because I couldn’t move\, but I couldn’t tell if I was awake or not. It’s a very strange feeling\, and you do weird things\, like trying to walk through wardrobes. There are a few elements on the album that reflect what we’ve been through in the last few years. We’ve been through a l ot\, some of which we’re still processing.”\n\nWork on the LP began in late 2023. The album was recorded at Rat Salad Studios in Hornsey\, North London\, with Rupert Lyddon serving as recording engineer and co-producer . Continuing the band’s established DIY approach\, early demos were capt ured in a cold room room in Dalston surrounded by partial drum kits\, art equipment\, and random bits of wood and metal\, before formal recording se ssions began. Coote joined the band for the album\, contributing performan ces informed by classic jazz\, soul and blues rhythms. Recording took plac e alongside Cadogan’s commitments as a touring and session guitarist\, i ncluding work with Liam Gallagher and John Squire\, The Black Keys\, and T HE THE\, as well as sessions at Easy Eye Sound Studios in Nashville.\n\nGr avity Freeze was written and sequenced with vinyl in mind and marks over 2 5 years since Little Barrie's first singles on Stark Reality.
