He had his first contact with music thr ough his father\, who played the trumpet and the tuba in the local wind or chestra from an early age. Daniel started by playing the classical trumpet in the Conservatory of Esch/ Alzette (LU) and had the chance to play in o rchestras like the &bdquo\;Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL)&ld quo\; and the Luxembourg Military Band. During this time Daniel won a few prizes\, \;four gold medals \;at the "Concours Jeunes Solistes" an d the "The European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY) \;201 8". He made his first steps in jazz in the class of Prof. Marc Harles whic h was a very formative time for him. He finished his \;classical degre e \;in the class of Prof. Michel Berns and Prof. Guy Conter in 2022. D aniel moved to Cologne\, Germany\, aged 16 to study at the &bdquo\;Hochsch ule fü\;r Musik und Tanz Kö\;ln&ldquo\;. He is grateful to be ment ored by Prof. Andy Haderer and Matthias Bergmann. Since 2021 he is one of the four young musicians of the "WDR Composers Fellowship" with mentor Flo rian Ross\, whereby he regularly works with the WDR Big Band. He started playing the piano in the Mayenne region of France\, a t the age of 10. At first he was self-taught\, inspired by the music of Th elonious Monk and Miles Davis&rsquo\;s second quintet. He then attended th e Angers Conservatory in high school\, before continuing his studies at th e Conservatoire National Supé\;rieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) in the Jazz and Improvised Music Department at the age of 18. He graduated in June 2023. Kai&rsquo\;s musical inspiration was sparked by hearing recordings from his father&rsquo\;s record collection. his early exposure to a wide range of music\, and the playing styles connected to them\, enabled him to devel op his initial understanding of music\, and planted the seed from which hi s own playing approach grew. In high school\, Gé\;raud participated in a jazz wo rkshop in Mâ\;con\; there he met Franç\;ois Gallix and Gaë\ ;l Horellou\, members of the Mû\; Collective\, who guided his first s teps. At the same time\, he met saxophonist David Ware\, a pivotal figure for the rest of his career. The American noticed him during a masterclass and invited him to study at his home in New York. This would be the first of a series of visits. In 2012 and 2013\, Gé\;raud visited New York few times\, and met double bassist Bill Lee and three young musicians whom he hosted in the Fort Greene neighborhood: Arnold Lee\, Ben Solomon\, and Kush Abadey. This period inspired Gé\;raud to write several songs\, and a friendly conspiracy was hatched to allow the recording of what woul d become Gé\;raud Portal's first album as a leader: \;Fort Green e Story. He returned to New York in 2014 to record a trio album with &Eacu te\;tienne Dé\;confin and Kush Abadey: this would become \;Broth ers\, his second album. That same year\, Gé\;raud settled in Paris a nd became an increasingly frequent presence on the city's club scene. An a ctive and sought-after sideman\, he was in demand by some of the biggest n ames in music for national and international tours: Ali Jackson\, Gary Bar tz\, Jazzmeia Horn\, Kirk Lightsey\, Sté\;phane Belmondo\, Saul Rubi n...
