SUMMARY:KINETIC: Workshop with Katrina McPherson
LOCATION:The Work Room
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on the rubric of the ‘empowered performer - embodied
  camera - empathetic viewer’\, the workshop will offer creative starting
  points and tools for developing screendance. Katrina will lead participan
 ts through movement-based practical exercises and reflective viewing-based
  tasks\, designed to encourage experimentation and awareness of the form. 
 Katrina will share ideas and research drawn from her own directing and cin
 ematography practice\, including using improvisation to develop dance for 
 the camera\, as well as tips and techniques for filming the moving body.Pa
 rticipants are welcome for any background and level of experience and shou
 ld please wear clothes they can move in\, a camera to film with and a note
 book to write in. Some exercises will have the option to work outside.Acce
 ssThe Work Room studio is on the first floor of Tramway\, 25 Albert Drive\
 , Glasgow G41 2PE\, and can be accessed by lift or stairs. There is level 
 access to the studio from the street. The Work Room has two gender-neutral
  wheelchair-accessible toilets\, a kitchen with tea and coffee making faci
 lities and a range of seating options (including chairs with and without a
 rms\, a comfy sofa\, beanbags and ergonomic height-adjustable desk chairs)
 . There are baby changing facilities on available on Tramways ground floor
  - accessible via a lift.KINETICKINETIC is a new screendance platform root
 ed in Glasgow\, founded by dance artists and filmmakers Monika Smekot and 
 Lewis Landini. It brings together artists working across movement and scre
 en\, creating a space to experience\, share and discuss screendance on its
  own terms. KINETIC celebrates screendance from Scotland and beyond\, expl
 oring the space between dance\, film and live performance\, and creating o
 pportunities for artists and audiences to connect\, exchange ideas and exp
 erience new work.AboutKatrina McPherson is an award-winning interdisciplin
 ary artist working at the intersection of performance and moving image. He
 r practice spans artist film\, installation\, documentary\, and live conte
 xts. Through embodied cinematography\, improvisation and rigorous structur
 al processes\, she has developed an innovative artistic language that expa
 nds how movement\, time and place are experienced. Over more than 35 years
 \, from her home in Scotland\, Katrina has directed a wide range of works 
 created in collaboration with performers\, choreographers\, composers\, an
 d companies. The resulting works have been presented at festivals\, galler
 ies and venues worldwide and are held collections including LUX Artists’
  Moving Image and Routledge’s Online Performance. Over a period of 15 ye
 ars\, Katrina was a director of arts programmes for UK television\, making
  films for the BBC\, Scottish Television\, ITV and Channel Four. Katrina r
 eceived a Career Achievement Award at Dance Camera West Festival in Los An
 geles in 2020\; an Honorary Award at the Choreoscope Dance Film Festival i
 n Barcelona (2022) and the Creative Scotland Award (2002). Her films have 
 been the subject of several international retrospectives\, including most 
 recently at the Jumping Frames- Hong Kong International Movement-Image Fes
 tival\, November 2025. Katrina has written widely about screendance and is
  the author of “Making Video Dance\, a step-by-step guide to creating da
 nce for the screen” (Routledge\, 2019)\, the 3rd edition which will be r
 eleased in early 2027. A much sought-after lecturer and mentor\, Katrina t
 eaches extensively and has initiated and facilitated numerous workshops\, 
 courses and symposia worldwide. Katrina was awarded a PhD by Published Wor
 ks from Edinburgh Napier University in 2023. She is currently the Course L
 eader of the MA Screendance at London Contemporary Dance School and is a P
 hD supervisor at LCDS and University of the Arts London. Supported by Film
