DESCRIPTION:BIG MACHINE\nBIG MACHINE is a five-piece band from British Colu
 mbia that brings together psychedelic rock\, contemporary songwriting\, fr
 ee improvisation\, country and gospel influences\, and the deep roots of A
 merican folk and Appalachian music. Drawing on these traditions without be
 ing bound by them\, the band has developed a sound that is expansive\, ele
 ctric\, and difficult to categorize.\nFeaturing Oliver Swain\, Glenna Garr
 amone\, Tyler Lieb\, Ashley Wey\, and Alex Campbell\, BIG MACHINE draws on
  decades of collective experience across folk\, roots\, jazz\, rock\, and 
 experimental music.\nTwo-time Western Canadian Music Award winner and Juno
  nominee Oliver Swain’s musical language was shaped in part by years spe
 nt travelling through the American South and Appalachia\, seeking out the 
 roots of American music firsthand\, and later touring internationally with
  some of the most celebrated roots bands of their generation\, including T
 he Duhks\, The Bills\, Outlaw Social\, and The Red Stick Ramblers. As a so
 ngwriter\, however\, he treats those traditions freely\, drawing just as r
 eadily on poetry\, contemporary life\, improvisation\, and sound itself\, 
 with banjo\, bass\, and voice providing different ways into the songs.\nSw
 ain and Garramone have been singing partners for more than a decade\, deve
 loping an almost uncanny ability to phrase together and a sibling-like voc
 al blend that has become central to BIG MACHINE’s sound. Garramone’s g
 uitar\, voice\, and instinct for harmony provide both intimacy and counter
 point within the larger arrangements.\nTyler Lieb moves effortlessly betwe
 en acoustic and electric guitar and pedal steel\, equally at home in count
 ry\, rock\, and folk. His imaginative use of effects gives each of those i
 nstruments a sonic vocabulary distinctly his own. Pianist Ashley Wey bring
 s harmonic sophistication and a deep gospel influence\, often creating key
 board sounds that blur the colours of Rhodes and Hammond organ into someth
 ing less easily defined.\nDrummer Alex Campbell brings an exceptionally se
 nsitive and detailed approach\, moving between brushes\, Blasticks\, and s
 ticks and using intricate percussion to shape the music from within\; his 
 playing can be almost textural at one moment and fiercely propulsive the n
 ext.\nTogether\, these five distinct musical voices give BIG MACHINE an un
 usually broad palette—moving easily between close vocal harmony\, spacio
 us acoustic music\, dense electric textures\, tightly arranged songs\, and
  collective improvisation.\nBIG MACHINE’s songs inhabit a landscape wher
 e old stories collide with contemporary life. Appalachian music and the wi
 der folk tradition remain part of the band’s foundation\, but rather tha
 n treating those traditions as artifacts to be preserved\, BIG MACHINE use
 s them as points of departure. Gospel harmony can meet psychedelic guitar
 \; banjo and pedal steel can emerge from a wash of organ and effects\; an 
 old musical idea can find itself transformed inside a newly written song.
