DESCRIPTION:Hero Trio is a tribute to the heroes of alto saxophonist **Rudr
 esh Mahanthappa** to honor legendary saxophone players who excelled in the
  trio format\, such as Sonny Rollins\, Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman and 
 legends Charlie Parker\, Keith Jarrett\, Stevie Wonder\, and Johnny Cash. 
 Drawing on music by the artists that shaped and sustained him\, with a par
 ticular focus on his childhood years and material largely neglected by oth
 er jazz artists\, the trio will perform interpretations with characteristi
 cally original arrangements. He will be joined by powerhouse French-born b
 assist **François Moutin** on double bass and drum great **Rudy Royston.*
 *\n\nOver the course of his twenty-five-year career Rudresh Mahanthappa’
 s music making has constantly pushed at the artistic boundaries to encompa
 ss such diverse influences as acoustic bebop\, electric fusion\, and Carn
 atic South Indian music. Hailed by Pitchfork as “jaw-dropping… one of 
 the finest saxophonists going\,” alto saxophonist\, composer and educato
 r Rudresh Mahanthappa is widely known as one of the premier voices in jazz
  of the 21st century. He has over a dozen albums to his credit\, including
  the acclaimed Bird Calls\, which topped many critics’ best-of-year list
 s for 2015 and was hailed by PopMatters as “complex\, rhythmically vital
 \, free in spirit while still criss-crossed with mutating structures.” H
 is most recent release\, Hero Trio\, was considered to be one of the best 
 jazz albums of 2020 by critics and fans alike. Rudresh has been named alto
  saxophonist of the year for nine of the last eleven years running in Down
 beat Magazine’s International Critics’ Polls (2011-2013\, 2015-2018\, 
 2020-1)\, and for five consecutive years by the Jazz Journalists’ Associ
 ation (2009-2013) and again in 2016. He won alto saxophonist of the year i
 n the 2015-2018 & 2020 JazzTimes Magazine Critics’ Polls and was named t
 he Village Voice’s "Best Jazz Artist" in 2015. He has also received the 
 Guggenheim Fellowship and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award\, among o
 ther honors\, and is currently the Anthony H. P. Lee ’79 Director of Jaz
 z at Princeton University. With an astonishing facility and power on the h
 orn\, and an inspired array of ensembles he’s led or played in since his
  emergence in the late ’90s-early ’00s\, Mahanthappa continues to crea
