 ti-instrumentalist\, composer\, producer and curator Taja Cheek. Operating
  between the worlds of art and music\, and outwards into film\, fashion an
 d cultural discourse\, Cheek is forging a unique path that transcends disc
 iplines to become one of the most vital and adventurous voices for this wa
 rped contemporary moment.\n\nCurrently the artistic director of Performanc
 e Space NY and readying the release of L’Rain’s fourth album\, fata mo
 rgana\, Cheek’s creative impact resonates through her uncompromising com
 mitment to community-building\, navigating structural inequality while cha
 llenging musical conventions and expectations at every turn. L’Rain is i
 ts thrilling manifestation.\n\nRaised in Brooklyn and rooted in the city
 ’s vibrant noise community\, Cheek’s world was defined by a tension of
  contrasts from the off — classically trained yet steeped in DIY iconocl
 asm\, drawn to lush orchestrations and gritty tape loops alike\, finding c
 racks in established forms\, taking risks and letting the light pour throu
 gh.\n\nFascinated by the schisms\, feedbacks and distortions that emerge b
 etween identity and society at large\, Cheek worked closely with collabora
 tors Ben Chapoteau-Katz and Andrew Lappin to hone a sound for L’Rain tha
 t is intense\, playful\, seductive and deeply personal\, deconstructing po
 p tropes with impressionistic flair and subverting the very notion of expe
 rimental music within the Black American tradition.\n\nWhere the “psychi
 c collage” of self-titled 2017 debut revelled in the collisions of hi- a
 nd lo-fi technology\, it was 2021’s Fatigue that propelled L’Rain to a
  wider audience. Gaining critical acclaim from NPR\, album of the year in 
 The Wire and #2 in Pitchfork's best albums of 2021\, it set the foundation
 s for 2023 album I Killed Your Dog\, which skewed towards ‘90s RnB influ
 ences — a bold\, bratty\, diabolical anti-break-up record that untangled
  Cheek’s relationship with femininity and the formal musical conventions
  that others imposed on her.\n\nfata morgana is the daring and ambitious h
 igh point of this quadrilogy of L’Rain releases. A heady synthesis of so
 nic influences\, from digi-dub\, dream pop and gospel slow jams to tape me
 ditations and crunched thrash metal\, it is an album that effervesces in t
 he messiness of life\, interrogating power relations while reckoning with 
 self-doubt\, self-love and the mirages of belonging and alienation that sh
 ape Cheek’s lived experience of the United States today.\n\nThis capacit
 y to articulate emotional nuance within a wider societal critique has defi
 ned Cheek’s curatorial work with major institutions like Creative Time\,
  the High Line\, and MoMA PS1\, where she reframed the music programme ove
 r several years. Challenging the systemic barriers to representation in th
 e arts\, Cheek’s accessible and community-centred approach defined her s
 uccess as guest curator of the 2024 Whitney Biennial and extends to her cu
 rrent role at Performance Space NY\, whose programming has shaped cultural
 \, theoretical and political discourse over four decades.\n\nIn May 2026\,
  L’Rain recorded an ambitious live album and concert film with the full 
 band at Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis. It is the latest iteration of a 
 creative sensibility that seeks out liminal realms across mediums\, whethe
 r working on specific projects (like recent single with Tasha and Jamila W
 oods) or broad-scope visions\, world-building for change within an industr
 y resistant to new forms.\n\nThrough the struggle L’Rain persists. Risin
 g to the moment and raising her voice amid the chaos during one of the mos
 t divisive eras in American cultural history\, Cheek is entering into her 
 power\, finding beauty in solidarity and hope in connection — joyful\, r

  VISTA is the musical project of the Virginia-raised singer/composer April
  George and the Maryland-raised composer/producer Matthew Thompson. In a d
 ecade-plus of activity\, the duo garnered international acclaim with an oe
 uvre both deeply invested in excavating the impacts of human existence and
  unbound by the trappings of simple classification. Their first major brea
 k came with 2018’s You Are Here\, followed by supporting runs with Littl
 e Simz\, Little Dragon\, and Mura Masa. Their 2021 follow-up Pit of My Dre
 ams channeled the duo’s internal and external frustrations into a snapsh
 ot of the ripples of burnout\, pushing their experimentation to its roughe
 st and darkest edges. 2023 brought April + VISTA one of their biggest cros
 sover moments to date: Slipping Into Color - a collaborative EP with Littl
 e Dragon\, made on a trip to Gothenburg\, Sweden - came out on the legenda
 ry Ninja Tune label. Little Dragon’s 2023 North American and European to
 urs soon followed\, with April + VISTA as direct support. April + VISTA’
 s set to release their debut album Traditional Noise: an exploration of th
 e formative music of their youth\, twisting deeply familiar sounds into st
 range new territory in an effort to upend the notion of popular music. The
  album’s an exercise in unlocking the feelings and noises of nostalgia t
