  oneself.I went through some depression last spring\, and then I went into
  therapy. It was also a big turning point in my life as I was about to tur
 n 30\, while Id written our first record when I was graduating from colleg
 ethats a big change\, Youssef explains. I couldve kept making bad choices 
 because theyre easy\, but I had to come clean to myself. Half the album wa
 s written before and the other half after\, so the songs are kind of hard 
 on myself but some are also hopeful\, with a light at the end of the tunne
 l. You put out a fire\, theres still an ember thats still glowingthats the
  record. Its about being at a low and climbing out of it.The close-knit Ne
 w Jersey/Philadelphia quintet had been going virtually nonstop since the r
 elease of Where the Heart Is (Topshelf). They went on tour with bands incl
 uding La Dispute and The Wonder Years\, embarked on their own headlining r
 unsorganically growing a devoted fanbase with their passionate live show\,
  which Stereogum has lauded as an immensely charming powerhousesongs that 
 obliterate the distinctions between power and finesse\, between pop and ha
 rdcore\, between emo and the larger continuum of crowd-pleasing rock n rol
 l. The young band earned co-signs from stars like Hayley Williams and Doja
  Cat\, while continuing to tour nonstop worldwide and play festivals like 
 Best Friends Forever\, Riot Fest\, and Outbreak.Though they were writing a
 ll the while\, the exhaustion of new expectations and such an intense tour
 ing regimen took its toll. When the time came for Sweet Pill to begin reco
 rding the material they felt was meant to be their next album\, Youssef wa
 s still figuring out what and how she wanted to sing on nearly half the so
 ngs. She was blockedno matter how many times she sat down and tried\, thin
 gs wouldnt click into place. I had just been trying to write these same pa
 rts for such a long time\, she says. You do it\, you say it\, and you dont
  even have to think about it really. You just make the sounds\, noises\, a
 nd words\, and you think absolutely yes\, [but] it was like fuck\, no ever
 y single time. I couldnt differentiate between what was just being hard on
  myself\, or if it was like actually fuck\, no. Now\, I realize it was def
 initely 50/50. The band decided to start fresh and step away from most of 
 the demos theyd created\, choosing to instead pause\, look inward\, and mo
 ve on their own time in order to ease the pressure they had been heaping o
