 lass="a">L. Shankar</a> brings you into the intricate and expressive world
  of Indian classical music.<br><br>Deeply rooted in the Carnatic classical
  tradition\, L. Shankar has spent decades expanding the sound and reach of
  Indian classical music.&nbsp\;<br><br>For this performance\, Shankar is j
 oined by an exceptional percussion ensemble featuring V. Selvaganesh on mr
 idangam\, kanjira\, and konakkol\; Amit Kavthekar on tabla\; and Swaminath
 an Selvaganesh on kanjira and konakkol.<br><br>Known for his powerful comm
 and of the violin and voice\, Shankar is recognized for his mastery of Rag
 am Tanam Pallavi\, one of the most demanding forms in Carnatic music. The 
 form moves through three parts: Ragam\, where the raga is explored freely
 \; Tanam\, where rhythm begins to shape the melody\; and Pallavi\, where a
  composed line becomes the centre for improvisation\, variation\, and rhyt
 hmic play.<br><br>Across his career\, Shankar has recorded widely\, toured
  internationally\, and collaborated with artists including Zakir Hussain\,
  Vikku Vinayakram\, Jan Garbarek\, Trilok Gurtu\, Sting\, Phil Collins\, M
 ichael Jackson\, Madonna\, and Peter Gabriel. His collaborations with Gabr
 iel brought his signature 10-string stereophonic double violin and Indian 
 vocal style into landmark works including Passion and the Secret World Liv
 e tours. His work has brought Indian classical music into conversation wit
 h jazz\, rock\, film music\, and global contemporary sound\, while carryin

 oted in Carnatic music\, the classical music tradition of South India.&nbs
 p\;<br><br>The music is built around ragas\, which give the performance it
 s melodic shape\, and talas\, which give it rhythmic structure. Rather tha
 n following a fixed song format\, the music often develops through improvi
 sation\, with the artist expanding a melodic idea in real time.<br><br>The
  percussion ensemble brings together both South Indian and North Indian rh
 ythmic traditions. The mridangam is the main double-headed drum used in Ca
 rnatic music. The kanjira is a small frame drum known for its sharp\, flex
 ible sound. The tabla brings the tonal depth and rhythmic vocabulary of No
 rth Indian classical music. Konakkol\, the vocal recitation of rhythm syll
 ables\, adds another layer\, allowing rhythm to be spoken as well as playe
