 \, 2003\, Afropop's Sean Barlow and Banning Eyre borrowed two movie camera
 s and headed to the Malian desert to attend the fourth Festival in the Des
 ert. In the rolling white dunes outside Timbuktu\, organizers constructed 
 a sound stage and presented three nights of music from Ali Farka Touré\, 
 Oumou Sangaré\, Lobi Traoré\, Tartit\, Lojo\, Tinariwen and Robert Plant
 \, among others. The Afropop team filmed intimate daytime performances in 
 tents around the site\, and spoke deeply with artists about that era’s n
 ewfound peace in northern Mali. The resulting film captures a moment of ho
 pe and solidarity not to be repeated in our time\, not to mention spine-ti
 ngling performances by some of Mali’s greatest hidden talents.\n\nIn sub
 sequent years\, as security conditions deteriorated\, the Festival was mov
 ed into Timbuktu. Its final edition came in 2012\, just as Tuareg and Isla
 mist rebels seized control of the region\, igniting conflicts that continu
 e to this day. This film stands today as a record of a poignant but perilo
 us time in this fantastically rich musical country. Barlow and Eyre will d
 eliver brief remarks before the screening.\n\n**The Mandingo Ambassadors\,
 ** led by veteran Guinean guitarist and maestro Mamady Kouyaté\, capture 
 the thrilling sound of Guinea's famous dance bands of the 1960s and '70s. 
 Since 2007\, the band has hosted Wednesday night residency at Barbes in Br
 ooklyn\, generally before a room full of dancers. Echoing legendary bands 
 of Guinea\, like Bembeya Jazz\, Horoya Band and Bala et ses Baladins\, Kou
 ytaté and his musicians continue to inspire listeners and dancers with th
 e spirit of Conakry\, Guinea\, where\, incidentally\, Ali Farka Touré fir
 st began playing guitar back in 1956. A dance set from the Mandingo Ambass
 adors will cap an evening of celebration and reflection of the West Africa
 n past.\n\nPeabody Award-winning **Afropop Worldwide** promotes understand
 ing and enjoyment of contemporary African and diaspora music on public rad
 io\, online (afropop.org) and social media. Launched by NPR in 1988 (airin
 g locally on the WAMC network since then) and hosted by African broadcast 
 personality Georges Collinet\, Afropop was the first nationally distribute
 d broadcast showcase for African music in the U.S. media. The program intr
 oduced American listeners to the greats—Youssou N’Dour\, Angelique Kid
 jo\, Oumou Sangare\, Gilberto Gil\, and others and took them to Lagos\, Ha
 vana\, Kinshasa\, Cairo\, Paris and other cultural capitals. Afropop World
 wide showcases artists and their work in cultural and historic context\, a
 cross the generational spectrum\, building community in support of artists
 ’ narratives\, live performances\, album and video releases\, and varied
  collaborative projects. In Afropop productions\, music becomes a lens for
  exploring contemporary and traditional perspectives on women’s rights\,
  climate change\, governance and other issues that define our shared futur
