 a nation. What begins as an account of the hearing slowly reveals itself t
 o be something far more personal\, a letter he has carried for years\, but
  never had the courage to finish. The story moves between the hopeful demo
 cracy of the 1990s and the violent final years of apartheid in the mid-198
 0s\, when South Africa stood on the brink of civil war. In those turbulent
  years\, Van Schroer relies on Gqozo\, a Black police informant trapped be
 tween loyalty\, survival and betrayal. Ordered to uncover intelligence abo
 ut the elusive "Prisoner 46664\," Van Schroer pushes Gqozo deeper into a d
 angerous game where failure is fatal. As pressure mounts\, Gqozo becomes e
 xpendable\, and the very system he serves turns against him. At home\, Gqo
 zo wages another battle. His relationship with his queer son\, Mkhonto\, h
 as fractured under the weight of fear\, shame and expectations inherited f
 rom both family and society. Desperate for acceptance and blinded by anger
 \, Mkhonto exposes his father as an impimpi - an informant - unwittingly c
 ondemning him to death. Years later\, Van Schroer is forced to confront th
 e choices that destroyed a family and stole a future. But as buried truths
  emerge\, so too does an unexpected act of grace. In revealing the one tru
 th Gqozo could never bring himself to say\, Van Schroer offers Mkhonto the
  possibility of healing\, and himself the smallest chance at redemption.\n
