  clarinet)—joined by vocal trio The Soultees\, whose harmonies evoke Sou
 th Africa’s legendary choral traditions. This project bridges cultures\,
  reimagining Marabi’s infectious rhythms and spirit\, creating a living 
 dialogue between past and present\, tradition and innovation. Echoes of Ma
 rabi is a celebration of exchange\, resilience\, and artistic connection.

 est lasting relationships with South African jazz\, has been that with Swi
 tzerland.Musicians from both countries connecting over years has led to ma
 ny beautiful collaborations.The latest project is an astoundingly beautifu
 l and unique duo album titled Echoes of Marabi\, aproject featuring South 
 African pianist Yonela Mnana and Swiss saxophonist Benedikt Reising.It is 
 an album that celebrates their connection and friendship. They are joined 
 by the dynamicvoices of the Soultee Sisters from Katlehong. The album is d
 ue for release in September 2025on XJAZZ.\nReising is no stranger to the S
 outh African music landscape\, having been part of severalprojects and tou
 rs there and Mnana is well established as a pianist\, known for his powerf
 ulvoice and compositions. The duo first met via South African trumpeter Ma
 ndla Mlangeni\, whiletouring in 2018 with a Swiss-SA project called The Mi
 ll. The pair's relationship was strengthenedupon promoting that album in E
 urope in 2019 when both Mnana and Reising were based inBern. They spent a 
 lot of time together and shared musical ideas that they were passionateabo
 ut.\nThe Covid19 pandemic delayed things and in 2023\, Mnana once again re
 ignited the idea towork together. “Yonela called me again and said\, ‘
 Hey\, everybody is traveling again. And let'sstart working together again.
  And I said\, ‘that would be beautiful’\,”says Reising. Mnanasuggest
 ed the idea to play as a duo\, and while Reising was in South Africa in Ma
 y last yearplaying with the ‘A Million O’Clock’ band\, another Swiss
 -SA project\, he extended his stay toexplore some ideas. A three-part-harm
 ony group\, the Soultee Sisters joined for rehearsals inKatlehong before t
 he recording was done at the Dyertribe studios just outside of Johannesbur
 g.Back home\, Manana works as a composer and teacher at the Ezibeleni High
  School inKatlehong\,a township located east of Johannesburg. He worked wi
 th three talented operasingers who he wanted to include on a project and t
 his developed into\, The Soultee Sisters. “Ifeel that that kind of three
 -part group follows on the long legacy of the triple harmony that hasalway
 s been done by those groups\, like by Miriam Makeba and The Skylarks\, the
  MahotellaQueens and so on. So it's something that is uniquely South Afric
 an.” Mnana refers to it alsobeing a play on those black vocal jazz group
 s from the early 30s and 40s in the U.S like TheMills Brothers or The Hamp
 ton Sisters.\nAbout the recording process Mnana says\, “Benedikt came he
 re to my house\, in the same waythat I was living in this house. And I fel
 t that at least he's getting to see the true nature of SouthAfrica. I don'
 t live in the suburbs in that way. He was very humble enough to come to th
 etownship school there in Katlehong and to be in the dust. And to see ordi
 nary people living inthe massive black township there and to be with us.
