Paul Gilroy er en av de fremste nålevende postkoloniale tenkerne\, og et sentralt navn innenfor spørsmål knyttet t il rasisme og kritisk raseteori. Han er professor emeritus ved University College London\, og kjent for bøker som There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack\, og Against Race. Kanskje aller mest kjent er h an for sin teori om det svarte Atlanterhavet\, og nå er boka med samme na vn for første gang tilgjengelig på norsk\, oversatt av Lars Holm-Hansen.
Gilroy viser hvordan de millionene av slavegjorte menneskene som bl e sendt til begge sider av Atlanterhavet utviklet en svart identitet og ku ltur på tvers av landegrenser\, med elementer fra Afrika\, Amerika\, Kari bia og Europa. Gilroy bygger teorien på lesninger av musikk\, og tenkere og forfattere som W.E.B Du Bois og Richard Wright\, og på et premiss om k ultur og identitet som noe ikke-essensielt\, noe sammensatt og flytende.&n bsp\;
Gilroys tanker har hatt vidtrekkende innflytelse både i akade mia og populærkulturen helt siden boka først kom ut i 1993. Hvordan ser Gilroy på mottakelsen og bruken av boka i dag\, mer enn 30 år senere? Og hvordan har den offentlige debatten\, så vel som de faktiske vilkårene \, omkring rasisme og antirasisme\, kultur og identitet endret seg siden d a?
Tony Sandset \;er forsker ved Universitetet i Oslo\, og har blant annet jobbet med kulturmøter\, etnisitet og «rase » i historisk sammenheng. Nå møter han Paul Gilroy til en samtale om ra sisme og antirasisme\, og framveksten av en svart kultur og identitet på tvers av Atlanterhavet.

Gilroy’s thoughts have had far-reachin g influence both in the academic world and in popular culture. How does he perceive the book’s reception and application now\, more than 30 years later? And what has changed in the public discourse\, as well as in the ma terial conditions\, related to racism and anti-racism\, culture and identi ty since then?
Tony Sandset \;is a researcher a t the University of Oslo\, where his work has included cultural meetings\, ethnicity\, and “race” in a historical context. He will join Paul Gil roy for a conversation about racism and anti-racism\, and the emergence of a Black culture and identity across the Atlantic.
