 diesem solitären Werk fasziniert: die Art und Weise\, wie der Franzose Be
 rlioz sich diesen urdeutschen Stoff aneignet – nämlich indem er den Kla
 ssiker durch ein genuin französisches Prisma filtert. Gerade die orchestr
 alen Klangfarben geben dieser Neuinterpretation des Beziehungsgeflechts um
  Faust\, Margarete und Mephistopheles einen ganz eigenen Reiz. Berlioz hat
 te sich der Aufgabe\, das deutsche Nationalepos in eine höchst melodiöse
 \, perlende und raffiniert-suggestive Musik zu überführen mit größtem 
 Respekt gestellt: »Ich versuchte weder\, das Meisterwerk Goethes zu über
 setzen\, noch\, es nachzuahmen\, sondern ließ es lediglich auf mich wirke
 n\, in dem Bestreben\, seinen musikalischen Gehalt zu erfassen.« Herausge

 romantically charged choral symphony that could also hold its own as an op
 era. The grand world theater of thirst for knowledge and megalomania\, of 
 seductiveness and depravity\, takes on a subtle French accent here.\nWhat 
 fascinates chief conductor Alain Altinoglu about this solitary work is the
  way in which the Frenchman Berlioz appropriates this quintessentially Ger
 man material – namely by filtering the classic through a genuinely Frenc
 h prism. It is precisely the orchestral timbres that give this reinterpret
 ation of the web of relationships between Faust\, Margarete\, and Mephisto
 pheles its very own charm. Berlioz approached the task of transforming the
  German national epic into highly melodious\, sparkling\, and sophisticate
 dly suggestive music with the utmost respect: »I did not attempt to trans
 late Goethe's masterpiece\, nor to imitate it\, but simply let it work on 
 me in an effort to grasp its musical content.« The result\, says Alain Al
 tinoglu\, is »a profoundly hybrid work\, and that is precisely what makes
