SUMMARY:Madrigirl (Jude Rees) / Juliana Day
LOCATION:Sheffield Bishops' House
DESCRIPTION:A dizzying array of ancient instruments and electronics\, a fu

  - Recently selected as one of BBC Radio 3 Late Junction’s “Sounds of
2025”\, Jude Rees is a genre-defying oboist and multi-instrumentalist ba
sed in the Midlands\, UK. Her noise is new/old\, breathing new life into o
ld instruments and fusing historical sounds with modern circuitry to creat
e her own sonic lexicon. Under her solo moniker MADRIGIRL\, Jude reimagine
s early music through a contemporary lens\, diving deep into the raw sourc
e material of ancient polyphony and reconstructing it with live-looped imp
rovisations\, her own compositions\, and a rich tapestry of drones. Her liv
e performances feature a bewildering array of instruments\, including shaw
 ms\, English border bagpipes\, crumhorns\, hurdy gurdy\, synths\, electron
ics and voice\, all woven into immersive\, otherworldly soundscapes. It’
s experimental music with warmth\, intelligence and edge.As an ensemble mu
sician\, Jude has collaborated with some of the luminaries of the British
folk scene and has guested on numerous albums and tours\, working with art
ists such as Will Pound\, Pilgrims' Way\, Jim Moray\, Isambarde\, Circulus
and Dave Swarbrick. Beyond the stage\, Jude regularly collaborates on pro
jects for film\, theatre\, and broadcast\, with credits including The Lord
of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim\, Revolution X\, Royal Bastards: Ri
se of the Tudors\, and productions and recordings with the Royal Shakespea
 re Company.www.judereesmusic.co.ukwww.facebook.com/JudeReesMusicwww.instag

andcamp.comJuliana’s music uses a haunting combination of the lower fami
ly of recorders\, whistles\, vocalisations\, found sounds and field record
ings\, building layered\, looping compositions that are both dark\, beauti
ful and dreamlike. Described as “fascinating and contemplative” (Jazzw
ise)\, her music takes influence from choral music\, folk\, early music\,
minimalism and artists such as Tim Hecker\, Kali Malone\, Steve Reich\, Ic
hiko Aoba\, William Basinski and Pauline Oliveros. Her debut album “lull
”\, commissioned by NFOJAiM\, and released on New Jazz and Improvised Re
cordings explores interludes- things that serve “in between” functions
 - places\, periods of time\, journeys\, dreams and stages of life."that wa
s a real journey wasn't it? The deft use of echo there to create this sinu
ous texture of sound. That was absolutely beautiful" - Freeness\, BBC Radi
