 n 2009\, the Festival of (In)appropriation is a preeminent international s
 howcase for experimental\, found-media film and video. Every year\, the Fe
 stival attracts artists working across an astonishing array of moving-imag
 e formats while probing the limits of collage\, machinima\, re-mix\, déto
 urnement\, mash-up\, and more. The raw material for their work derives fro
 m the abundant new sources of audiovisual media to have surfaced in recent
  decades\, from official state and commercial archives to vernacular colle
 ctions\, home movie repositories\, and digital databases of every stripe. 
 By exploiting and refashioning these pre-existing materials\, such creatio
 ns generate novel juxtapositions and recombinations\, often producing idea
 s and meanings that were unintended or unimagined by the original makers. 
 These remarkable works\, in other words\, are “inappropriate” in the p
 rofoundest sense of the term.\n\nSponsored by Los Angeles Filmforum\, the 
 Festival of (In)appropriation strives to evince the remarkable range\, sop
 histication\, and critical impact of this vital aesthetic practice.\n\n~\n
 \nJaimie Baron (Festival Director) is a teacher\, writer\, curator\, and t
 heorist. Her work on documentary\, experimental film and video\, audiovisu
 al appropriation\, and digital media has been published in numerous journa
 ls and anthologies. She is the author of The Archive Effect: FoundFootage 
 and the Audiovisual Experience of History (2014) and Reuse\, Misuse\, Abus
 e: The Ethics of Audiovisual Appropriation in the Digital Era (2020). She 
 is also a Contributing Editor of Millenium Film Journal. She currently tea
 ches Film and Media Studies at the University of California\, Berkeley.\n
 \nJennifer Proctor (Curator) is an award-winning found footage filmmaker a
 nd scholar whose experimental work deconstructs intersectional representat
 ions of gender in mainstream media. She is an Associate Professor of Journ
 alism and Media Production at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and co-f
 ounder and director of EDIT Media (Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion in T
 eaching Media). Her films have been featured in such venues as Anthology F
 ilm Archives\, Edinburgh Film Festival\, Rotterdam\, Ann Arbor Film Festiv
 al\, Festival of (in)Appropriation\, and more. Her essays have appeared in
  journals including Screen\, Jump Cut\, and \\[in\\]Transition: Journal of
  Videographic Film and Moving Image Studies. She is the former director of
  the Austin Cinemaker Co-op and managing director of the Cinematexas Film 
 Festival and currently sits on the advisory board of the Ann Arbor Film Fe
