We sit d own with a drink and talk. Some of it happens in Japanese\, some in Englis h\, and most of it somewhere in between. Fluent or absolute beginner\, bot h are normal here. Nobody corrects you and there is no ice-breaker round. Roughly half our guests are people from abroad living in Japan who want to practise Japanese\, and half are Japanese people who want to practise Eng lish. Most come on their own\, so turning up alone is the normal way to do this.
