He had his first contact with music through his father\, who played the tr umpet and the tuba in the local wind orchestra from an early age. Daniel s tarted by playing the classical trumpet in the Conservatory of Esch/ Alzet te (LU) and had the chance to play in orchestras like the &bdquo\;Orchestr e Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL)&ldquo\; and the Luxembourg Military B and. During this time Daniel won a few prizes\, \;four gold medals&nbs p\;at the "Concours Jeunes Solistes" and the "The European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY) \;2018". He made his first steps in jazz in the class of Prof. Marc Harles which was a very formative time for him . He finished his \;classical degree \;in the class of Prof. Miche l Berns and Prof. Guy Conter in 2022. Daniel moved to Cologne\, Germany\, aged 16 to study at the &bdquo\;Hochschule fü\;r Musik und Tanz Kö \;ln&ldquo\;. He is grateful to be mentored by Prof. Andy Haderer and Matt hias Bergmann. Since 2021 he is one of the four young musicians of the "WD R Composers Fellowship" with mentor Florian Ross\, whereby he regularly wo rks with the WDR Big Band. In the past\, he also had the honour of studyin g with Gá\;bor Tarkö\;vi\, Laura Vukobratović\, Wolfgang Guggen berger\, Frits Damrow\, Klaus Schuhwerk\, Benny Brown\, Marquis Hill\, Ndu duzo Makhatini to name a few. He started playing the pian o in the Mayenne region of France\, at the age of 10. At first he was self -taught\, inspired by the music of Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis&rsquo\; s second quintet. He then attended the Angers Conservatory in high school\ , before continuing his studies at the Conservatoire National Supé\; rieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) in the Jazz and Improvised Music Department at the age of 18. In high school\, G&eacut e\;raud participated in a jazz workshop in Mâ\;con\; there he met Fra nç\;ois Gallix and Gaë\;l Horellou\, members of the Mû\; Co llective\, who guided his first steps. At the same time\, he met saxophoni st David Ware\, a pivotal figure for the rest of his career. The American noticed him during a masterclass and invited him to study at his home in N ew York. This would be the first of a series of visits. In 2012 and 2013\, Gé\;raud visited New York few times\, and met double bassist Bill L ee and three young musicians whom he hosted in the Fort Greene neighborhoo d: Arnold Lee\, Ben Solomon\, and Kush Abadey. This period inspired G&eacu te\;raud to write several songs\, and a friendly conspiracy was hatched to allow the recording of what would become Gé\;raud Portal's first al bum as a leader: \;Fort Greene Story. He returned to New York in 2014 to record a trio album with É\;tienne Dé\;confin and Kush Abad ey: this would become \;Brothers\, his second album. That same year\, Gé\;raud settled in Paris and became an increasingly frequent presen ce on the city's club scene. An active and sought-after sideman\, he was i n demand by some of the biggest names in music for national and internatio nal tours: Ali Jackson\, Gary Bartz\, Jazzmeia Horn\, Kirk Lightsey\, St&e acute\;phane Belmondo\, Saul Rubin...
