Die Songhoy\, eine ethnische Gruppe aus dem Norden Malis\, prägen den Sound des „Desert Blues“ maßgeblich. Mit „Héritage“ würdigt die Band die großen Musiker*innen vergangener Generationen\, deren Werk sie bis he ute inspiriert. Ihre Songs behandeln Themen des Lebens und der Liebe in Ma li und basieren auf Fünf-Ton-Tonleitern\, Rockrhythmen\, rauen Vocals und glitzernden Gitarrenklängen. Diese Elemente sind auch auf „Héritage “ allgegenwärtig\, allerdings mit einem intimeren Groove\, der mit Klä ngen aus verschiedenen ethnischen Traditionen des Landes verwoben ist. Mig ration und Vertreibung prägen dabei auch ihren Blick auf kulturelles Erbe in ihrer Musik.\n\nSeit über zehn Jahren leben die vier Bandmitglieder i n Bamako\, da sie wegen religiösem Fanatismus nicht sicher in ihre Heimat im Norden Malis zurückkehren können. Bamako mit seiner intensiven Musik szene ist zu einem Schmelztiegel der Klänge geworden. Diese Erfahrung hat dazu geführt\, dass Songhoy Blues ihr eigenes Verständnis von „Tradit ion“ neu überdenken\, denn diese entspringt seit jeher nicht aus einer einzigen Quelle\, sondern entsteht aus Vielfalt und Begegnung. „Die Verm ischung der Kulturen hat nicht erst heute begonnen!“\, kommentiert Leadg itarrist Garba Touré. Bekannt wurde die Band 2013 mit ihrem energiegelade nen Stil\, der als „Timbuktu-Punk“ beschrieben wurde. With Héritage\, they move into a more acoustic\, creative re-imaginin g of the “desert blues” style that has brought them to world fame.\n\n The Songhoy are an ethnicity living along the bend of the Niger river in n orthern Mali (their language is Songhai\, hence the two spellings that are often used interchangeably). Songhoy music is one of the backbones of the “desert blues” sound. Songhoy Blues pay tribute to some of the great musicians of the past\, whose work continues to inspire them\, giving ‘a big thank you to the ancestors who bequeathed works of art so that future generations could orient themselves’.\n\nFor over a decade\, when not o n tour\, the four members of Songhoy Blues\, three of whom are originally from the north\, have been based in Bamako\, capital of Mali\, unable to r eturn to their homeland\, where musicians are in real danger of their live s because of religious fanaticism that sees music as ‘haram’ (a sin). \n\nCharismatic\, articulate and creative\, the band burst onto the scene in 2013 with a powerful style and stage manner once described as “Timbuk tu Punk”. Their songs deal with issues of life and love in Mali\, and ar e based on five-note scales\, rock rhythms\, gritty vocals\, and glitterin g guitar. These elements are ever present in their new album Héritage\, b ut with a more intimate groove laced with other sounds from different ethn ic traditions from around the country. Migration and forced displacement b ring new perspectives to the notion of heritage in their music.\n\nThe exp erience of being in Bamako\, an intensely musical city\, with a melting po t of music\, has led Songhoy Blues to rethink their own understanding of t he concept of tradition. It does not come from one single source. “The m ixing up of cultures didn’t begin today!” comments lead guitarist Garb a Touré.\n\nHéritage was recorded in the Remote Records Studio and Studi o Moffou in Bamako\, with producer Paul Chandler\, and draws on the remark able wealth of musical talent in the city. The album presents new composit ions and reworkings of old classics. It is infused with the ethereal sound s of various traditional instruments\, all in the hands of great Malian ma sters: kora (harp)\, soku (one-string fiddle)\, kamalengoni (8 string yout h harp)\, flute\, Senufo xylophone\, and calabash percussion\, plus guest vocalists. Floating in and out are traces of takamba\, the wondrous dance of the Tuareg\; plus wassoulou music\, Mande griot music\, Senufo dance an d more.\n\nUnexpectedly\, a steel guitar wanders in\, sounding eerily like the voice of the desert. All these tone colours are brilliantly woven int o a rich tapestry which is both familiar and unexpected. All their songs h ave some element of social critique. “We are artists\, we observe our so ciety and we comment on it\, giving advice and critiquing where necessary.
