 spired by the classic 19th-century poem 'A Visit from Saint Nicholas' by C
 lement Clarke Moore\, first published in 1823. This poem played a key role
  in shaping the modern image of Santa Claus: a jolly\, rather plump figure
  who on Christmas Eve travels by sleigh and reindeer -- named Dasher\, Dan
 cer\, and Donner & Blitzen -- going from house to house to drop gifts down
  chimneys into stockings hung above the fireplace. The poem built upon the
  tradition of Sint-Nicolaas\, the holy bishop known to us as Sinterklaas. 
 Dutch colonists brought their Sinterklaas traditions to New York\, formerl
 y known as New Amsterdam. There\, "Sinterklaas" linguistically evolved int
 o "Santa Claus". Cirque du Soleil now brings this rich story to life on st
