DESCRIPTION:The HIV/AIDS crisis transformed the relationship between gay m
 en\, pressure groups\, broadcasters and the government in 1980s Britain. T
 his witness seminar will hear from four men who shaped and observed this t
 ransformation - Keith Howes (then at Gay News)\, Julian Meldrum (Capital G
 ay and Hall-Carpenter Archives)\, Martin Weaver and Tony Whitehead (respec
 tively Counsellor and Press Officer and founding member and Chair of Direc
 tors of the Terrence Higgins Trust). Audience members are encouraged to sh
 are their experiences of the 1980s and to reflect upon subsequent media co
 verage of LGBTQ+ issues. The seminar is chaired by Professor Virginia Berr
 idge\, author of AIDS in the UK: The Making of Policy\, 1981-1994\, and is
  organised by Professor Marcus Collins as part of the Arts and Humanities 
 Research Council project Re-viewing LGBTQ+ Lives through Broadcasting in T
 wentieth-century Britain. It is accompanied by a pop-up exhibition showcas
 ing interviews collected by the National HIV Story Trust. The witness semi
