Dig for authentic fossils in our dig pit! Each dig features 9 of the "Usual Suspects” (our most common fossils, including 3 shark's teeth, turtle shell, bone, ray barb/mouth plate), a pecten piece, two surprise fossils and a few imposters & shells to keep it interesting. Our staff will be on hand, giving information and helping you identify your fossils. We provide an informational sorting mat which you can take home. Keep the fossils too! They are great to use as "index fossils" - examples of commonly found items on our beach. The dig pit is enjoyable for has been tested on youngsters of all ages, and the sweet spot seems to be between 5-15, though people of all ages find the identification session valuable as a way to learn the basics of Amelia Island fossils. This is especially true for those new to fossils. The dig pit is available whenever we are open (11-5 Wed-Sat, 11-4 Sundays). You're welcome to drop by and dig, or reserve in advance to guarantee a spot at one of the 5 dig stations. Depending upon age, dig sessions last 15-25 minutes for the dig and another 10-20 minutes for the identification session. Many thanks to Herb Ferguson and Pete Fuller who donated their labor to build the pit for us, and Main Street/American Express, who provided the funds to purchase the materials.
