Hoshiyama is a small settlement in Hayama, Kanagawa, about ten minutes inland from the coast. Since 2017, the former Hoshiyama Project, an initiative by Umiyama Hayama, has been tending approximately 16,500 square metres of satoyama woodland that had become overgrown after decades without management. Through this work, we have been creating a rich outdoor space where adults and children can play, gather, and learn. From the outset, we have worked to improve the ecological health of the site, drawing on approaches such as Daichi no Saisei (land regeneration), permaculture, and forest gardening. Through a variety of events and workshops, we have offered people of all ages opportunities to connect with the forest, continuing our efforts to pass on to future generations the richness of having a satoyama close to everyday life. Within easy reach of the Tokyo metropolitan area, Hayama brings the sea, hills, rivers, and town together in a compact landscape. It is a wonderful setting for exploring how we might shape our future while experiencing our connection with nature firsthand. What gifts does connecting with nature bring us? And how might we carry those gifts forward through our own lives? We hope to share a space where we can explore these questions together, learning from one another and creating together. —Umiyama Hayama
