2, 3, 4 October 2026, 6pm Market Theater Laboratory, Newtown Award-winning Swiss director Boris Nikitin and Johannesburg-based journalist and director of photography Tšeliso Monaheng present KIDS, an extraordinary international production blending theatre and live cinema, premiering simultaneously at the Market Theatre Laboratory in Newtown, as well as the Kaserne Basel and the Festival Internazionale del Teatro di Lugano in Switzerland. A group of young people wander through Joburg at night. Born in the early 2000s, they have grown up in a world of economic crises, reignited wars and propaganda-fuelled tensions. They are curious, sad, angry, ironic and vulnerable — yet they do not hide their vulnerability, instead turning it into their weapon. The action takes place on the streets of inner-city Joburg, and is broadcast live onto a large screen at the Market Theatre Laboratory during every performance. The city becomes a real-life extension of the black box. A gripping portrait of a young generation emerges before the audience's very eyes — a vibrant urban odyssey in the spirit of post-documentary theatre and new South African cinema.
