Alberta’s story is an immigrant story. From the food we eat, to the culture we celebrate, to the innovations that drive our economy, immigrants have always played a leading role. So why do we find ourselves faced with a referendum that makes an assessment on the value of their contributions?
At this installment of Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History, leading expert on the economics and social impacts of immigration Dr. Nketti Johnston-Taylor explores the historical impacts of newcomers on our community; not just economically, but also culturally and socially. In this current age where the contributions of immigrants are constantly questioned and accused of “taking away” from current residents, Nketti challenges us to consider what Calgary and Alberta would look like without the diversity that we now enjoy. In the wake of the referendum results, she asks us to consider whether limiting immigration is truly the key to building a prosperous, sustainable economy and society.
Come for the hot dogs, stay for the conversation about how immigration doesn’t take away, but in fact makes us stronger.

ABOUT HOT DOGS & HOT TAKES ON HISTORY
Debunk and debate local histories at Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History! Every month, a historian or specialized expert will share their research and offer new perspectives on the history we think we know.
Every Hot Dogs & Hot Takes event kicks off with a short presentation on a historical topic by the guest speaker, followed by an interview facilitated by The Confluence President Jennifer Thompson, and an open discussion where you can offer your knowledge and questions about the evening’s topic.
What’s a hot take without a hot snack to go with it? Fuel the evening with a delicious hot dog and sea salt chips for $5. Thank you to Harvest Meats for sponsoring the hot dogs for this event!
