The Breasts of Tiresias is a brand new provocative one-person play by Angelo de Klerk and Malcolm Purkey that is rooted in truth and lived experience. Michael is a Greek trans man born into a conservative Greek family in Johannesburg. Now in his 50s, he is obsessed with the ancient Greek blind prophet, Tiresias and the Greek myths he wraps himself in. He uses these stories to try and make sense of his life. Tiresias is cursed by the gods to change sex every seven years. To Michael this isn’t a curse. He envies Tiresias. He prays for the same fate but the gods never listen. Michael suffers from gender dysphoria, temporary flings and heartbreak. The production is directed by Malcolm Purkey and is written by Angelo de Klerk and Malcolm Purkey with additional material by Renos Spanoudes. It includes live music created by Carlo Mombelli. The Breasts of Tiresias will run in Barney Simon Theatre for a strictly limited run of two weeks from 15 – 25 October, ending its season with performances as part of the inaugural Queer Festival at The Market Theatre.
