Blackandwhitesound is kicking off Halloween weekend with Canadian legend Jay Tripwire, Spaced London’s Tho making his San Francisco debut, and Justin Shaffer rounding out the lineup. Vancouver’s Jay Tripwire has spent decades carving out his own hypnotic corner of house and techno. Deep, dubby, psychedelic and relentlessly groovy, his sound has remained unmistakably his own while influencing generations of selectors along the way. A key part of London’s underground, Tho has spent the better part of two decades refining a sound that moves fluidly through house, breaks, prog, UKG and techno without ever feeling boxed into one lane. As part of Spaced London, he’s been closely tied to a crew known for intimate parties, serious selectors and a distinctly heads-down approach to dance music, with appearances across spaces and platforms including FOLD, The Lion & Lamb and Dimensions Festival. Born and raised in New York City and now based in Berlin, Justin Shaffer’s path has taken him through Seattle and Bretagne, with a thread that still runs through San Francisco. His sound draws from the bittersweet tail end of pre-Giuliani New York nightlife, the Detroit-Berlin axis, and the space where contemporary classical and electronic music intersect.
