Event Description The boom in Japanese translated literature has only gained steam since our inaugural event last year. Japanese novels are stocked on bookshelves across the world. Japanese authors are dispatched overseas for press tours and reading events. Japanese publishers are hitching their wagons to increased funding from government grants. Amidst all this productive clamor, the role of a translator continues to contort and evolve like a murder suspect’s rambling alibi. We gather this November to demystify the role of the translator and investigate the roaring success of mystery novels in translation. Just like great detectives, our incredible panelists will draw upon their keen observational senses, their sharp powers of deduction, and, of course, their genteel social manners to entertain us with an afternoon of industry chatter. When it comes to translated novels, we all ask the same questions—whodunnit, whydunnit, and howdunnit? Let’s piece together the clues and find out! Panel discussions will be conducted in English. Translators, publishing professionals, avid readers—all are welcome. Have a burning question for our panellists? Send it to us through Peatix, and we’ll try to answer your questions on the day. Event Schedule Doors Open (12:30pm) Panel One: On New Translations (1pm - 2pm) Rising stars Sameeha Anwar and Adam Sutherland discuss their first full-length book translations, walking us through their unique publishing journeys. EXIT 8 by Genki Kawamura was originally a video game, then a hit movie, then a Japanese novel. DUNDERHEAD by Tomoko Yoshida was published by a small indie press with the editing expertise of esteemed translator Polly Barton. Join us as we navigate the dark and twisty corridors of modern translation publication. Panel Two: On Mystery (2:20pm - 3:20pm) Louise Heal Kawai and Jim Rion are our experienced guides into the intricate machinations and explosive success of the Japanese mystery genre. They will train their magnifying glasses on the recent boom in mystery translations and what we can expect from further Japanese mysteries published in English. Louise will shed light on the cozy side of the genre with MY GRANDFATHER, THE MASTER DETECTIVE by Masateru Konishi, while Jim leads us through Uketsu’s eerily addictive STRANGE BUILDINGS. Panel Three: Industry Talk (3:40pm - 4:20pm) Finally, we’ll bring the band together to talk shop! All four translators will participate in a roundtable discussion on the state of the JPN>ENG literary translation scene, tackling nitty-gritty questions like: How do translators get synopsis and sample work? What’s up with VIPO funding? Which translation competitions are worth the time commitment? This panel will particularly appeal to emerging translators, publishing professionals, and anyone with an interest in how the book industry operates. Networking Time (4:20pm - 5:40pm) Hang around after the panels to chat and network with fellow translators, publishing professionals, and literary fans. Light refreshments will be provided. Location This event will be held in-person at the Shuppan Club, a popular literary event space in Jinbocho run by the joint enterprises of several Japanese publishing houses. We will be in room 403+404 on the 4th floor. Take the escalator to the 3rd floor reception area, and Shuppan Club staff will be on site to guide you.
