At the heart of this programme is the art of transcription — a 19th-century practice of recreating music written for one medium in another — featuring ingenious reinventions of iconic instrumental and chamber works for unaccompanied choir. Experience Ralph Vaughan Williams’ soaring The Lark Ascending (featuring violin soloist Zhu Zunzun), Olivier Messiaen’s Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus ( Praise to the Eternity of Jesus ) from his profound Quatuor pour la fin du temps ( Quartet for the End of Time ), and Samuel Barber’s beautiful Agnus De i ( Adagio for Strings ) reborn through pure vocal colour. From Clytus Gottwald’s brilliant choral arrangements of intimate lieder by Gustav Mahler, Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf to contemporary expressions such as Zechariah Goh’s Abandoned Qin (废琴), Transcription is a boundary-pushing exploration of musical textures and the limitless expressive power of the unaccompanied choir.
