The performance will take place on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at 7:00 PM , inviting audiences to experience a powerful program exploring the deep connections between place, memory, and human expression. The San Jose State University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. David Vickerman, will be the featured guest ensemble on the program. Harris states “ Sacred Grounds is a concert that reflects on the landscapes, both physical and emotional, that shape our lives. From the energy of movement to the solemnity of ritual and the grandeur of ancient civilizations, each work offers a unique perspective on what we hold sacred.” The program opens with Motu by Chris Buchanan, a work inspired by motion and momentum, reimagined here as a tribute to the personal ritual of running, the pavement as sacred ground, where discipline, freedom, and reflection meet. The emotional core of the concert is found in Edvard Grieg’s Funeral March , a profound meditation on loss, remembrance, and the enduring power of communal ritual. Derek Bourgeois’ Serenade offers an intimate and deeply personal moment in the program. Composed for his own wedding and performed as guests departed the ceremony, the piece captures the quiet joy, reflection, and transition of that sacred space. In this context, the wedding itself becomes a form of sacred ground, where commitment, community, and memory converge. The program concludes with Machu Picchu by Satoshi Yagisawa, a sweeping and cinematic work that captures the mystery and majesty of the ancient Incan city, symbolizing the enduring legacy of human civilization etched into the earth.
