Best known today as the lyric writer for classic jazz songs including “Work Song,” “Afro Blue” and “Dat Dere,” Chicago native Oscar Brown Jr. (1926 – 2005) amassed an impressive career in which he was by turns poet, playwright, singer, jazz musician, TV presenter, radio host and political activist. October 10, 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Brown’s birth. With a mix of archival footage, music, interviews and animation, Donnie L. Betts' brilliant documentary portrays Brown as a lyrical genius whose work was never fully embraced by mainstream audiences in proportion to his contributions.
