He encountered an area of immense natural and cultural beauty, populated by people of tremendous hospitality. But a region of incredible complexity, still trying to move on from the horrors of war and ethnic division. From accidental border crossings, sliding down snow fields, abandoned villages, lightning storms, and a very close call with Europe’s most venomous snake, there was never a dull moment in this raw and wild land.
