Jazz and riverboats have a long and storied history. From the earliest days of jazz around the turn of the 20th century, musicians performed aboard steam-powered river vessels, travelling up and down the Mississippi and bringing their music to audiences along the way. Those early jazz musicians didn’t have the luxury of the technology we now take for granted. If an instrument or voice wasn’t loud enough, there were no microphones to help it carry. No PA systems, no amplification—and certainly no AI-generated dynamic EQ adjustments! What the musicians played was what the audience heard. It’s this raw, acoustic approach that the Swan River Ramblers seek to recreate aboard the PS Decoy. On Sunday, October 18, the Swan River Ramblers return to The Decoy for their first show of the 2026–27 season. Led by double bass player Pete Jeavons, the band also features Adam Hall on trumpet and vocals, Lachie Glover on tenor saxophone, and Ray Walker on banjo. Expect an eclectic mix of traditional jazz, swing, jump, blues, gypsy jazz, New Orleans-style jazz and more, with a repertoire featuring music made famous by legends including Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, among many others. Come aboard and experience the magic of a sunset cruise on the glorious Swan River, accompanied by classic jazz performed in a stripped-back, grassroots acoustic style that is becoming increasingly rare in our modern world.
