Brothers of Affliction is a powerful and intimate drama about three estranged brothers brought together for one volatile night inside the home that still holds the scars of their childhood. Tyriq wants answers about the father who abandoned them, while Chris and Shane have spent years surviving by refusing to confront the past. As alcohol, anger, and old resentments loosen their defenses, buried memories surface, forcing the brothers to reckon with abuse, violence, abandonment, and the very different ways each learned to survive. What begins as a search for answers becomes an explosive confrontation with family legacy, Black masculinity, brotherhood, forgiveness, and the cost of silence. At its heart, Brothers of Affliction asks what happens when men who were taught to bury their pain are finally forced to name it—and whether brotherhood can survive the truth. Written by award-winning playwright Paris Crayton III , Brothers of Affliction has developed a life on stages across the country, with two productions in Atlanta , as well as productions in Florida and Los Angeles . Now, the play comes to St. Louis, bringing both the work and its playwright home. A native of St. Louis , Crayton returns to the city with a full production of his work for the first time in two decades. His last play produced in St. Louis, The Day Daddy Came Home , took the stage 20 years ago . The return of Brothers of Affliction marks a meaningful homecoming for an artist whose career has continued to grow beyond his hometown. For Crayton, this production is more than another staging of Brothers of Affliction . It is an opportunity to bring a deeply personal story about family, pain, healing, and brotherhood back to the community where his own story began.
