Unbound presents: Compulsion // October 9th · 11pm-late
We're back at the Boston warehouse for another all-night techno session — showcasing four artists making their mark on the northeast's underground, and a 5 point sound system by Sound Logic.
Stepping in at peak time is Providence-based DJ and producer Emma Rak. Propulsive, intense, and delicate, her sets stretch from deep, percussive techno into freetekno, psytrance, and newer mutations of fast techno and halftime bass. She has recently released music with Somnia Records, Ninety-Three Collective, v23, and Synthetic Pleasures, among others. As the founder of anti-alias, an event series in Providence oriented around leftfield techno and DIY parties, and having recently completed a multi-year residency on Hong Kong Community Radio, Emma approaches the booth with a rare intensity and delicacy that coexist in ways few selectors can pull off.
On closing duties is Cow Tools. NYC-based and shaped by the underground forest parties she helped organize in the UK, she gravitates toward hypnotic techno, minimal, and hardgroove — foraying into other genres to draw from softer and harder ends of the spectrum. The result is entrancing and varied, dreamlike and groovy, ethereal and sharp. Also a writer, she finds particular delight in crafting expertly paced sets with a strong sense of narrative arc. Expect a surreal and dreamlike close that locks you onto the dancefloor.
Seo returns to the Compulsion booth. Korean-American, Boston-raised, and now NYC-based and active across the city's queer and FLINTA-focused underground. As a resident of Infra Boston, her techno puts the body first — hypnotic grooves, hard claps, and rolling percussion form the backbone of sets that steadily tighten their grip on the dancefloor. The result is a sound that is fluid yet relentless, pulling the room deeper into the groove until instinct takes over. After her set from the first edition we couldn't be more excited to welcome her back.
Opening the night we welcome PucciKat — China-born, Boston-based, and active across both cities' underground scenes. Drawn to dance music through a fascination with both the music and the community surrounding it, her sets move between psychedelic and hypnotic cuts and punchier peak-time grooves, building a sound that is dark and high-energy while showcasing more playful sides of techno. Moving from deep and restrained to fast and heavy, PucciKat focuses on creating hypnotic momentum while keeping the dancefloor at the center, exactly what we need to start the night.
