Mutual - Halloween Edition: Ma Sha, Ultrabruma, MADDOG

Halloweekend starts October 30th in our favorite warehouse, and for this one we’re turning our attention toward bass. Things will be a little heavier, a little stranger, and built around the kind of low-end that feels particularly good in a room like this, especially when bloody fangs and spooky creatures are involved. Come in costume, but don’t overdress. You know how hot it gets in there.

Kindergarten co-founder and one of the most inventive forces in New York’s club circuit, Ma Sha headlines with her unmistakable strain of high-voltage club music. Propulsive basslines, metallic drums, warped rhythmic structures, and very forward-thinking techno collide in a sound that refuses to settle comfortably into any one style. Having taken command in the booths of institutions like Nowadays, Berghain, Fabric, Making Time, and Sustain Release, Ma Sha arrives armed to the teeth with wicked potions guaranteed to have us dancing our bones away.

Among the most exciting projects emerging from South America, Ultrabruma, the collaborative effort of Brenda and Maria Manuela, is another name worth paying attention to. Drawing on Latin-adjacent and diasporic rhythmic traditions, the duo moves between bass, techno, and moments of unexpected softness, finding plenty of friction along the way. Having each received international recognition in their own right, the two join forces for their first appearance in our city, bringing a distinctly adventurous approach to contemporary electronic music.

Local favorite Maddog rounds out the night with the playful, buoyant selections that have made her such a beloved fixture in our scene. She’ll be leaning into techno for the occasion, though anyone familiar with her sets knows she’s never been particularly interested in staying within the lines. Her instinct for moving between genres, without losing the dance floor, makes her a natural fit for a night like this. Expect a few surprises and a good rattling of the skeleton.

We wanted to shake things up for this one, bringing together three distinct approaches to club music with a shared appetite for the unexpected. A little experimentation, plenty of low-end, and no particular interest in playing it safe. The night of the witches is upon us, and we know exactly where we’ll be spending it.
