On Friday, October 16, the second edition of Others Film Club will take place at Soto in Kyoto.
At the heart of this edition is Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, a collective based in Tehuacán, Puebla, Mexico.
Since their formation in 2012, they have produced more than 500 works. Moving across digital video, 16mm film, found footage, poetry, sound, Indigenous cultures, and mythology, their singular moving-image practice explores the body, ritual, perception, and “Trance.”
For this event, we will screen their recent work Tierra en Trance, accompanied by a sound collage performed by Kyoto-based 1729. Rather than simply “adding” music to a finished film, this live screening will bring image and sound into collision, allowing them to transform one another in real time.
The evening will also feature a live performance by filmmaker Reiji Saito and Kukangendai.
Working with an enormous archive of photographs and videos accumulated through his daily practice, Saito fragments and reconstructs these materials to create a distinct sense of time within the moving image.
Kukangendai, meanwhile, have continually placed the very format of the three-piece band under pressure through ideas of editing, duplication, repetition, and error. Having collaborated for many years, Saito and Kukangendai will come together once again at Soto.
Coincidentally, Saito has in recent years been moving back and forth between Mexico and Japan as part of his artistic practice, while Kukangendai will embark on their first tour of Mexico this autumn.
From Mexico to Kyoto, and from Kyoto to Mexico.
An evening crossing the boundaries between film and music, moving image and body, screening and live performance.
This event is presented in association with IMAGE FORUM FESTIVAL 2026 KYOTO, which opens at Demachiza on the same day. The festival programme will also feature a special focus on Colectivo Los Ingrávidos.
