Step into a more personal side of Kyoto at Umenoya, a century-old family-run establishment in Gion. Over an intimate seasonal lunch, spend the afternoon with a Kyoto Maiko through conversation, two traditional dances, matcha, photographs, and relaxed cultural exchange. Rather than simply watching a performance, guests are invited to share the same space, talk directly with the Maiko, enjoy seasonal cuisine, and experience the warmth and rhythm of Kyoto hospitality in a small group. Saturday, October 24, 2026 12:30 PM–3:00 PM ¥16,800 per person Limited to 8 guests An Intimate Afternoon in Gion Our hope is to introduce guests to a broader sense of Kyoto — through its people, spaces, seasonal food, tableware, conversation, traditions, and hospitality. Your afternoon begins gently inside Umenoya. Before lunch, you’ll hear a little about the house and the family behind it, including the story of our proprietress and her own connection to the Maiko world. You’ll then meet the Maiko in Umenoya’s Showa-era snack bar, where the atmosphere is intentionally relaxed. Over a welcome drink, guests can introduce themselves, begin asking questions, and simply enjoy talking together before moving into the tatami room. There is no stage separating the Maiko from the guests. The experience is designed around sharing time together. Seasonal Lunch & Maiko Performance Once seated in the tatami room, a seasonal Japanese course prepared by Umenoya will be served. Throughout lunch, the Maiko remains with the group, allowing conversation to continue naturally between courses. During the meal, she will perform two traditional dances, giving guests the opportunity to experience Maiko performance from just a few steps away rather than from a large audience setting. There will also be time for questions about her daily life, training, traditions, Gion and Kyoto’s hanamachi culture, with multilingual support available throughout the experience. Matcha to Close the Afternoon Toward the end of the meal, the pace slows. We will demonstrate the preparation of matcha, followed by an opportunity for guests to try preparing their own bowl. Matcha will be enjoyed alongside dessert as the final part of the afternoon. Rather than treating matcha as a separate workshop, we see this quiet tea moment as the natural conclusion to the experience — a chance to slow down, reflect and enjoy the lingering atmosphere of Umenoya before saying goodbye. About Umenoya Umenoya is a family-run establishment in Gion with more than a century of history and a deep personal connection to Kyoto’s hanamachi culture. For us, a Maiko experience is not simply an added performance. The Maiko is an introduction to a wider Kyoto experience — one expressed through the house itself, the people who welcome you, seasonal cuisine, objects and tableware, conversation, and the changing atmosphere of the year. Our aim is not to recreate Kyoto as a museum exhibit, but to allow guests to spend time inside a living place where these different elements still meet.
