Workshop: Kinetic Paper Mobiles
A Collective Sculpture
Curated by GAS Collective
Facilitated by Seden Lai
💬 About Community Conversations
In conjunction of the Rendezvous with Madness Festival organized by Workman Arts, Community Conversations considers materials as entry points to explore the definition, practice and meaning of care. Curated by GAS Collective in collaboration with artists Michelle Peraza and Seden Lai, this project explores how working with materials embodies the complexities of how we care and connect as communities in our current world.
Looking into the sun, the moon, the stars, and the cardinal directions, visitors are invited into alternate cosmologies where they can carefully attend to their surroundings, reorient themselves, and reflect on what it means to care and build reciprocal relationships among communities with Peraza and Lai's mesmerizing mural and sculptural works.
Two hands-on workshops on natural paint-making and collective sculpture-making will be hosted to activate the gallery space as a studio. They offer visitors opportunities to feel, touch, and process the materials together in a low-barrier setting through careful methods.
💡Workshop Details
In this workshop, Seden Lai will share her creative practice of handcrafting sculptures using paper, metal and found objects. Lai will demonstrate her material processes, exploring the materials’ malleability, permanence and strengths.
During the workshop, participants will work collectively on a circular hanging mobile in response to the gallery space. By making and contributing their individual sculptures to the collective work, care and attend to the surroundings.
Participants are invited to bring their found object. Prompts will be given closer to the workshop date, Each participant will have the option to exhibit their work in the studio space during the exhibition period or to take it with them.
⚠️ Material Notice:
In this workshop, we will be using various paper samples, armature and fishing wire, scissors, needle-nose pliers, and eyelet kit. A studio assistant will be on hand throughout the workshop to assist you in using any of the listed equipment as needed.
Please be aware that we will capture photography and video at the program. By participating, you acknowledge that your image or testimonial may be used in Workman Arts, GAS Collective, and the artists' marketing materials, including websites, social media, and/or press outlets, if any.
---#GETMAD #COMPLEXITIESOFCARE
Complexities of Care. Care is often messy, and, like Love, both good and harm are done in its name. Our experiences as care givers and care recipients are intimately connected to our social location. Who can consent? Whose care is compensated? How is it valued? What type of care is offered? Is it sustainable? The various levels of care and its disparities are linked to gender, race, ability, and class amongst many other identities.
