Descripción

A ceremony to remember the 40+ men hanged for sodomy in England between 1800 and 1835, the youngest aged 16. Horsemonger Lane Gaol, where Newington Gardens now is, was the site of two such executions, in 1809 and 1833, while a third man slit his own throat there with a penknife to escape the same fate. The last two to be executed in England, James Pratt and John Smith, were held here in 1835 for three weeks before being walked in chains to the Old Bailey, for trial and execution at Newgate. On Sun 27th September at 2.15pm we will be remembering all our dead on the site of the gaol, telling the story, laying a wreath and lighting candles. We invite you to join us and bring your own tokens. Meet at The Rising, 98 Harper Road, SE1 (200 yards away) at 2pm.THEY MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN.
