Trial & Error DIY Music Lab 2026: Music & Visuals Try things out. Fail. Carry on. On Friday 2 October 2026, the Trial & Error DIY Music Lab returns to the MusikZentrum Hannover – under the theme ‘Music & Visuals’. From 3 pm to 11 pm that afternoon and evening, everything will revolve around music and its visualisation: hands-on, practialand with experts who will share their knowledge directly. As usual, the programme is aimed at geeks, musicians, nerds, Freaks and artists with a desire to experiment and get stuck in. The DIY ethos that has always characterised Trial & Error– trying things out, failing, carrying on, rather than waiting for the perfect equipment or budget – also runs through the Lab: four workshops in the afternoon will provide practical tools for visuals, video and experimental sound, before the evening culminates in an audiovisual concert. The workshops 1. TouchDesigner 101 – a brief introduction to VJing with AVHS (4.00 pm to 7.00 pm) Kicking things off is the Berlin-based artist and VJ AVHS. Known for her colourful, expressive style, she uses playful tools – from Xbox controllers to graphics tablets – to transform music into vibrant, interactive real-time visuals. In this workshop, she’ll introduce participants to the TouchDesigner programme and help them take their first steps in the world of live visuals and VJing. 2. No-Budget Music Video – free tools, Tips & tricks for content & video creation (3.00 pm to 6.00 pm) Very few artists have the financial resources for a professional video production. Emi and Luca, who between them have over ten years’ professional experience in this field, will share tips, tricks and free tools for achieving professional results in content creation and music videos – even with absolutely no budget. 3. Audiovisual Live Performance in Ableton Live with Otis Clark (4.00 pm to 7.00 pm) Otis Clark, still known to some as Clockwerk, will provide a practical insight into the development and execution of a fully audiovisual live performance using Ableton Live in this workshop. The session begins with a short performance, which will be used to explain the technical, musical and creative aspects of the set step by step. The focus is less on presenting individual tools in isolation and more on how they interact within a performable system as a whole. This workshop is organised in collaboration with SAE, which is a partner of the Music Lab this year – accordingly, it will take place on SAE’s premises at the Marstall. 4. The Mixer as an Instrument – Exploring No-Input Techniques for Sound & Rhythm with lifeisfeedback (5.00 pm to 7.00 pm) A brief introduction to the concept of no-input mixing, in which feedback loops, EQ, Volume and external effects processing merge into a finely balanced chaos – from harsh amp distortion and clipping to gentle tones and stuttering rhythms, this workshop demonstrates how the mixing desk itself becomes an instrument. Ideal for anyone wishing to delve deeper into experimental electronic sound for performance and studio work. The workshop will be held in English. lifeisfeedback (aka Benjamin Chilton) is a performer, music educator and co-founder of the modular synth shop Elevator Sound and the Machina Bristronica festival – a passionate machine nerd who relies entirely on playfulness and curiosity in his sonic explorations. The evening concert (7.00 pm to 11.00 pm) And when it comes to music and visuals, it’s a no-brainer: the workshop programme concludes with an audiovisual concert, curated in collaboration with Machina Bristronica from Bristol: three live electronic sets bringing together music and visuals from Hanover and Bristol at the MusikZentrum. First up, Age Eternal from Hanover will perform a live set, with live visuals by Luc Amaden from Bristol. This will be followed by Evo Ether from Bristol, with visuals by Momo from Hanover. The evening will conclude with a live audiovisual set by Kat Davids and AVHS Minimum age: 18+
