歌舞伎を通じて、江戸時代の文化をのぞいてみませんか。 【本講座の概要】 （日本語）日本が誇る伝統芸能「歌舞伎」――その根幹をなすのは、数百年の時を超えて連綿と受け継がれてきた役者の「名跡（みょうせき）」です。本講座は、全編英語の講義を通じて、代々の名優たちが磨き上げてきた「型」の継承と、襲名をめぐるドラマを鮮やかに紐解きます。英語による講義を通して、役者の「家」が紡いできた歴史をグローバルな視点から再発見する、知的刺激に満ちた機会を提供いたします。 （English）Kabuki, Japan’s premier traditional performing art, is fundamentally defined by its myōseki—the prestigious stage names seamlessly inherited across centuries. Conducted entirely in English, this lecture series vividly unravels the succession of these names and the transmission of kata (artistic styles) refined by generations of legendary actors. The instructor will provide bilingual summaries and clarifications as needed, thereby enhancing dynamic and intellectual communication. 第１回 11月12日（木）10:30-12:00 兼ねる芸の音羽屋 ―― 尾上菊五郎の系譜/The Versatile Art of Otowaya — The Lineage of Onoe Kikugorō （日本語） 現在、大いなる節目となる襲名興行を迎えている尾上菊五郎家。その名跡の歴史と伝統を紐解きます。「兼ねる役者」と称され、時代物から世話物まで圧倒的な芸域の広さを誇る「音羽屋」の真髄とは何か。激動の歴史のなかで、いかにして独自の芸と家系が連綿と受け継がれてきたのか、その全貌を解説します。 （English） This session explores the history and traditions of the Onoe Kikugorō line, which is currently celebrating its monumental succession performances (shūmei kōgyō). We will examine the essence of the "Otowaya" acting house, renowned for its extraordinary artistic versatility as quintessential kaneru yakusha (all-around actors) who masterfully span genres from grand historical epics to realistic domestic dramas. The lecture unravels how their distinct artistic styles and lineage have been seamlessly transmitted through turbulent history. 第２回 11月19日（木）10:30-12:00 変貌する名跡 ―― 中村歌右衛門と成駒屋の系譜/The Metamorphosis of a Great Name — The Lineage of Nakamura Utaemon and the Narikomaya （日本語） 現代の歌舞伎界において、戦後最高峰の女形として圧倒的な存在感を放った六代目中村歌右衛門。しかし、その名跡の源流を江戸時代に遡ると、元来は「立役」であり、屋号も現在の「成駒屋」ではなく「加賀屋」でした。本講義では、一次史資料を博捜・提示しながら、この劇的な歴史的変遷を検証します。役者の「家」と「芸」が、時代の要請のなかでいかに変容し、今日へと受け継がれてきたのか、名跡の裏に隠された歴史のドラマに迫ります。 （English） In the modern era, Nakamura Utaemon VI cast an overwhelming presence as the pinnacle of post-war onnagata (female-role actors). However, tracing the origins of this prestigious stage name back to the Edo period reveals a striking contrast: the early Utaemon were originally tachiyaku (male-role actors), and their guild name (yagō) was not Narikomaya, but Kagaya. By presenting and examining relevant primary historical documents, this lecture analyzes this dramatic transition. We will explore the rich and dramatic history behind the name, uncovering how the acting house and its artistic traditions adapted and transformed through changing eras. 第３回 11月26日（木）10:30-12:00 近代演劇への挑戦 ―― 松本幸四郎と高麗屋の軌跡/Embracing Modern Theatre — The Trajectory of Matsumoto Kōshirō and the Kōraiya （日本語） 江戸時代より代々、屈指の立役（男役）として歌舞伎界を牽引してきた松本幸四郎家。その歴史を紐解くと、時に松本幸四郎から市川團十郎（成田屋）の名を継承する役者を輩出するなど、江戸歌舞伎の時代から両家は濃密な血縁・芸脈のネットワークで結ばれていました。その芸と絆は、現代の十代目幸四郎と十三代目團十郎の「はとこ」関係に至るまで連綿と受け継がれています。さらに幕末以降、日本が開国し、欧米の演劇が流入して社会や演劇界が激変するなか、高麗屋は西洋劇（シェイクスピア劇など）の翻訳上演にも果敢に挑むなど進取の気性を示しました。江戸から近代の変革期、そして今日へと至る高麗屋のダイナミックな継承史を解説します。 （English）Since the Edo period, the Matsumoto Kōshirō line has consistently led the Kabuki world as premier tachiyaku (male-role actors). Exploring their history reveals a dense network of bloodlines and artistic ties interwoven with the Ichikawa Danjūrō family (Narita-ya) since the pre-modern era, including notable instances where actors transitioned from the Kōshirō name to succeed to the Danjūrō title. These enduring traditions and bonds have been seamlessly transmitted down to the contemporary cousinship between Kōshirō X and Danjūrō XIII. Furthermore, from the late Edo period onward, as Japan opened its borders and the influx of Western theatre drastically reshaped society and the performing arts, the Kōraiya demonstrated a spirit of enterprise, boldly venturing into adapted performances of Western plays, including those of Shakespeare.
