Drawing to paint in Gouache with Leigh Rigozzi Term 4 2026

Description

Drawing is a skill that is sometimes overlooked in the development of paintings. There is something wonderfully spontaneous in the interaction of hand, eye, and brain to create a drawing. In each session of this course we will undertake exercises in drawing that will then be developed into paintings. The preferred medium of the paintings is gouache, an exceptionally versatile and spontaneous medium. There will be a focus on letting go of preconceived ideas and allowing ourselves to play. Some of the topics covered will include: • Loosening up our hands (and brains) • Sketching as a means of generating ideas • Developing attractive compositions • Creating drama through tone and colour relationships • Exploring the spectrum of realism to abstraction • Incorporating storytelling into our work • Isometric, oblique, and three-point perspectives We will look at a wide range of source materials, from the work of classic and modern painters, to comic book artists, to contemporary Tasmanian artists. Some touch-points include the works of Paul Klee, Phillip Guston, Pieter Bruegel, Gary Panter, Ivan Brunetti, Chris Ware, and Nicola Gower-Wallace.
