On Saturday, October 3rd at 11am, the Museum at the John Brown House will hostNational Park Service Ranger Allison Horrocks for the debut of the walking tour Family Ties and Industrial Bonds. This tour will explore the familial and commercial connections that drove early industry in Rhode Island, with a focus on the partnership of Almy, Brown, and Slater. Throughout their lives, John Brown, Moses Brown, William Almy, and Samuel Slater worked to keep their businesses all in the family. Connecting College Hill and Pawtucket, this tour will feature the sites related to these individuals and will show how kin networks were not just convenient, but essential to the first generation of industrialists.Allison Horrocks is a public historian specializing in labor history, who currently works as a Park Ranger at Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park in Pawtucket, RI. Previously, Horrocks worked at Lowell National Historical Park and a number of other historic sites in New England. She earned her Ph.D. in History at the University of Connecticut and is the co-author of Dolls of Our Lives: Why We Can't Quit American Girl.The tour costs $15, or $10 for RIHS members. Advance registration is strongly encouraged as this tour will sell out. Participants can expect to travel approx. one mile on this 90-minute walking tour. Comfortable shoes recommended!
