Montreal pianist and composer Gentiane MG presents Can You Hear the Birds?, a deeply human project shaped by connection, listening, and emotional presence. Performed with her long standing trio, bassist Levi Dover and drummer Mark Nelson, the music unfolds as a shared experience rooted in trust, intuition, and collective expression. The repertoire draws from Gentiane’s fourth album, Can You Hear the Birds?, a fully realized and resonant artistic statement that marks a defining chapter in her career. The music explores connection in all its forms, with others, with nature, with creativity itself, and with parts of oneself still being discovered. Rather than telling specific stories, the compositions create open emotional landscapes, allowing listeners to move between turbulence and calm, vulnerability and strength, grief and joy. While Gentiane’s earlier work leaned inward, this project turns outward, embracing curiosity, movement, and light without denying emotional depth. The trio works through an ear-based creative process rooted in listening rather than intellectual construction, giving the music a strong sense of immediacy, fluidity, and lived experience. Group communication and improvisation are central to the performance, shaping each concert as a living, evolving moment. Gentiane MG last performed in Winnipeg as a part of the 2023 Winnipeg International Jazz Festival. - Please note: Food and table service will not be available during Jazz at the Fort Garry Hotel performances.
