A relaxed matcha afternoon in a 110-year-old Japanese house, hosted in English. No experience needed, and it's not a formal tea ceremony, so come as you are. You'll pick your own tea bowl, make matcha side by side with Japanese hosts, and enjoy it with Japanese sweets. Then try a matcha tasting game, and take your own bamboo whisk home. Sunagawara is a house from the Taisho era (1912–1926) in Ichikawa, Chiba. It has an old-style gate, tatami rooms, a detached tatami room and a moss garden. It's a 5-minute walk from JR Ichikawa Station, about 20 minutes from Tokyo Station. What we'll do • Look around the house • Watch our guide whisk the first bowl • Choose your own tea bowl and tell us why you picked it • Make your own matcha with a Japanese host right beside you, then enjoy it with Japanese sweets (wagashi) • Play a matcha tasting game: compare three kinds of matcha, then guess which one is in the mystery spoon. It's based on tōcha, a tea-guessing game that samurai and nobles played some 600 years ago. • Take home your own bamboo whisk (chasen). Everyone gets a new one. You can sit however you're comfortable. Our guide enjoys tea as a hobby and will show you the basic steps. Your host Hi, I'm Hide, the founder of ACTUAL JAPAN.
