Rave. Literature. Kamakura. On Saturday, November 7, join us at a traditional Noh stage overlooking a Japanese garden in Kamakura for an afternoon of books and ambient music. Choose a spot and settle in with a book. Listen to live music and DJ sets through wireless headphones, or take them off and head to the lounge for a conversation. You can spend the afternoon absorbed in your own reading, talking about books, or moving between the two. Our theme is “Books That Open Up Your World.” Bring a book that has broadened your perspective, and discover the books chosen by our guests and fellow readers. You're very welcome to come on your own. Reading & Book Sharing Wireless headphones are provided for use at the event. Adjust the volume to suit you, or take them off to listen to the garden. The lounge is a space for talking about books. Bring at least one book that has opened up your world. Fiction, essays, poetry, philosophy and photography books are all welcome. If you'd like to share a book, write a short note about why you chose it on one of the bookmarks provided and leave it inside. A voluntary book exchange will take place later in the afternoon. You're also welcome to keep your book with you and simply enjoy reading. Music Yuu Amemiya will present “water side,” a live ambient performance that captures the sounds of rain and water in real time and turns them into music. There will also be ambient DJ sets and short talks by guest book curators, with each talk lasting no more than three minutes. DJ AKARI MICHISHITA Creative Director / DJ Working across fashion, spatial design, music, and community, she creates experiences that emerge through the relationship between people and places. As a DJ, she draws primarily from Ambient, Electronica, and Alternative music, while moving fluidly across genres. Her selections respond to the atmosphere of each space and the sensibilities of the people within it. Rather than treating music simply as something to be “listened to,” she sees it as one of the elements that shapes the space and the experience of time itself. White socks are required if you wish to read on the Noh stage. You're welcome to bring your own reading cushion. Twenty zabuton floor cushions will be available at the venue. Arrival & departure: You may arrive and leave at any time during the event. Important Information Noh Stage • If you wish to read on the Noh stage, you must bring and wear white socks. The stage is still used for Noh practice. Please respect the venue's rules. • Eating and drinking are not permitted on the Noh stage. Please use the areas designated by staff. • Handle your belongings and any equipment carefully to avoid scratching the stage or damaging venue furnishings. Headphones • The wireless headphones are loaned for use at the event. Return them to staff before leaving, including temporary exits. Please do not take them outside the venue. • Headphones are delicate electronic equipment. Handle them carefully and avoid drops or strong impacts. Repair costs may be charged if you damage the headphones or venue equipment. • The headphones are not waterproof. Keep them away from rain, drinks and other liquids. • Set the volume to a comfortable level. Watch your surroundings and footing when moving while wearing headphones. • Reception may vary depending on your location and wireless conditions. Let staff know if you experience a problem or notice any damage or loss. Shared Spaces • Depending on other bookings, the lounge and kitchen may be shared with other venue users. Sliding partitions separate the adjacent meeting room, but do not fully block conversation. • Please enjoy conversations about books in the lounge and be considerate of readers, other venue users and neighbours. • Look after your valuables and belongings, keep passageways clear, and follow staff instructions for safety and venue protection.
