THE ART OF THE VIOLIN CONCERTO Markiyan Melnychenko, violin Stewart Kelly, piano Violinist Markiyan Melnychenko and pianist Stewart Kelly present an exploration of the violin concerto, pairing the well-known favourite of Max Bruch's first violin concerto with the lesser known but extraordinary concerto of Aram Khachaturian. In the first of a planned series which aims to revive the historical tradition of programming concertos with piano accompaniment in solo recitals, these concerts will allow audiences to explore the rich violin-concerto genre, giving listeners access to live performances of violin repertoire that is not commonly heard alongside timeless standards. PROGRAM Max BRUCH Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Aram KHACHATURIAN Violin Concerto ABOUT MARKIYAN MELNYCHENKO Ukrainian-Australian Dr. Markiyan Melnychenko CF has been described as “a master violinist” (Stringendo) and has served as Principal 1st Violin with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and Lecturer in Violin at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. He has performed in 17 countries across the world including recitals in London, Chicago, Los Angeles, solo appearances with orchestras in Japan, Ukraine, Australia, the United States, and critically-acclaimed recordings released on the Tall Poppies, Naxos, Toccata Next and Toccata Classics labels. ABOUT STEWART KELLY Stewart Kelly is a pianist, artistic director and advisor, teacher and entrepreneur. He is founder and artistic director of Music by the Springs, a chamber music festival held in country Victoria each February and owner of House of Pianos, Melbourne’s premier piano salon. As a pianist he works principally within the worlds of chamber music and art song and collaborates with many of Australia’s finest musicians and singers, performing across Australia at festivals and leading concert series.
